Default Poker - Small to Middle Pairs

Cash Games

What is the optimum way to play these hands (22 - 99) in a cash game ?

I know we are looking to hit a set or favourable flop but what is the best way to play them.

At present I am currently around 80% limp and 20% raise with these hands - if the pot hasnt been raised.

But increasingly when I do hit my set I am usually in trouble with the board (flush / straight possibilities).

Me personally i will limp with them although in early stages i will call upto 3-4x bb raise with them (as long as its not over 120 ish chips) If missing then im out. If hitting i will check or flat call and see the turn card. Only then will i push making someone pay max for their 3/1 flush draw (assuming 2 of a suit on board - if 3 then i will limp or fold) this sometimes disguises that you are on flush draw. If the River is a blank i will put a token 20-30% pot bet in to try and represent missed draw bluff.

Oops sorry... Dont play as much cash as i do tourneys. Slight change for me would be

Limp - Call upto 3x BB
If hitting (no draws on flop) check, flat call - allow someone else to raise or have a free card.
If still no draw on the turn then i fire out. If there is i will proceed with caution and call upto 3x again . If flush draw there still on the river then i will fold to a raise. I now require Full House to stay involved

If missing - Out then and there

Different styles for different people.

I play mainly 6-handed cash.

I will usually limp with the lower pairs, ie: 22 to 66, though may fold in early position on an aggressive table. Will usually raise an unopened pot with 77 upwards, especially on the button and usually from the blinds.

If I hit my set I'm usually content to bet half the pot, depending on texture of the flop, to make it look like a continuation bet. Typically if I get a caller I will then bet 3/4 to full pot on the turn.....if I get a raiser on the flop, iI will often just call, then check-raise the turn if he is acting after me.
