Voting is completed before the final isn't it?

yes.

the fact is cannavaro's 100th game may influence this slightly as well.

Zidane has had two great games out of five!

Cannavaro has played well in every game but will never be considered to have had the effect on a game that a playmaker or striker can. (Flawed IMO but what can you do!?)

If the voting finishes before the final then I would imagine that Zidane will have it in the bag mostly because of the Brazil game. He can only enhance that by having a good game tonight.

Cannavaro should get it though. Solid as a rock throughout.

I didn't know the voting was done before the final

btw, I wasn't saying ZZ should get it, only that he would get it... I think the fact that it's his last game (assuming France reach the final) will counterbalance the 100th cap factor, so long as he has a good semi, and doesn't get booked

Idiot boy Blatter won't want a defender winning, either...

Was it done before the final last time? If it was, it makes sense as Oliver Khan won it despite making a huge gaffe for Ronaldo's opening goal in the final.

Given that Andrea Pirlo has twice won FIFA man of the match in Italy's run to the final (Cannavaro hasn't won any), is the midfielder value at 11s with Paddy Power?

Probably not famous enough but maybe worth a saver if you're lumping on Cannavaro.

I'm pretty sure it's announced before the final, and it was the same with Kahn four years ago.

Definitely announced before the final. Ronaldo won it in 1998 after all.

Six candidates remain on course for the title of Gillette Best Young Player. Three of them have been nominated by our readers, while the other three have been chosen by FIFA’s Technical Study Group.

Fans have voted on FIFAworldcup.com to nominate Cristiano Ronaldo (POR), Luis Valencia (ECU) and Lionel Messi (ARG), while the Technical Study Group has opted for Lukas Podolski (GER), Tranquilo Barnetta (SUI) and Cesc Fabregas (ESP).

The best player out of that lot is clearly Messi but the best player in this tournament has been young Ronaldo.

I see, this week, that he was the subject of an e-mail hate campaign desingned to stop him winning this award. How sad.

Taken from the BBC website:

"Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won the award at the 2002 World Cup, while Brazil's Ronaldo was the winner in 1998.

Fifa will announce its final decision on Monday at around 0900 BST. "

Surely if the winner is decided before the game they would announce it then rather than waiting until the next day.
How come you are all so certain that it is chosen before the final?

Prince Poldi crowned Gillette Best Young Player
Germany striker Lukas Podolski was confirmed as the inaugural winner of the Gillette Best Young Player award on Friday. The FIFA Technical Study Group described him as "a key element in Germany's attack" at this FIFA World Cup™.

Could see that coming - a "consolation" for an efficient host (not intending that to detract from Podolski).

How can Pirlo not win this, given that he's won three individual MoM awards?
