I'm glad they did as I layed the under 1.5 at ht. It was a break though. Fair play to Lippi and Italy for not sitting back. They blatantly didn't fancy penalties at all. I don't buy this 'fantastic game' nonsense. Extra time was very entertaining but it wasn't exactly thrilling up until then. I didn't want Italy to go through but they did deserve it so I won't begrudge them. First real performance they have put in all tournament at just the right time.

They had been poor up till now.

If somebody has a large bank balance there's some free money to be had on top goalscorer on Betfair. People want to back Podolski.

As I posted before during the first half...I thought it was a cracking game and keyser seems to rate it as well. Difference of opinion is fine but hardly think there is any need for the ' I don't buy this 'fantastic game' nonsense comment.

He's still got the 3rd/4th place match to bag some goals in doesn't he? Unless he's suspended or something? Don't remember him getting booked though.

Correct, ps. Free money it is not. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the bench for most of the time and Klinsmann giving all the other squad members a game. What price Olly Kahn making a farewell appearance?

Also agree with 36. It is by no means "nonsense" to suggest this was a cracking game.

For what its worth, I really enjoyed Italy vs Germany very much as well. It was a proper football match - none of the languid (or laboured in England's case) "knocking the ball around" to no great purpose.

Both teams showed purpose, drive and desire and fear seemed absent, which was a welcome change.

I can't bear the thought of Portugal going through as they have contributed very little to this World Cup, in any sense. They are a distinctly average side and I don't believe they are capable of showing the (surprising) drive and motivation that Italy displayed last night.

Allez les bleus!

Sorry, forgot about that complete non-event.

To make matters worse teams put out their reserves in the yawn-fest, don't they?

How about this for a scenario?

Portugal or France play their reserves and don't care... Klinsmann wants to go with a bang for the home crowd... a German gets four or five, and it may not be Klose or Podolski

I thought last night was a cracking game too, for what it's worth... give me a proper footballing 0-0 above an over-reffed multi-goal win for Brazil (say) every time

Couldn't agree more. I had a quick look at the Betfair forum after 90 minutes just out of curiosity and sure enough all the old faces were there, bemoaning what a dreadful game it was because it didn't finish 4-4.

I seem to remember a magnificently entralling nil-nil which got the same treatment from the Betfair Brains Trust at the time was the Milan v Juventus European Cup Final at Old Trafford. It was at about this time that I gave the place up I think

I think plenty of people over there carry the adolescent attitude "my team is out, the rest is rubbish anyway".
Read loads of foreign press over the day and the tenor was almost unison (well, except for the Argentinian papers ) that it was a cracking good game quality and entertainment wise.

I was reacting more to the 'best game of the tournament' comments, which I don't agree with at all. It was a good game, although it had more to do with what was at stake rather than the quality of football I thought. The game really picked up when Gilardino, Iaqunta and then Del Piero were brought on. Italy having four attack-minded players on the field really opened the game up. I commend Lippi for that. Extra time was the best thirty minutes of football I've watched all tournament. I thought it was just a decent and enjoyable game up until that point. The Italian players were staying down an age though after tackles, which spoiled the second half somewhat imho.

Colo, are you German? I always thought you just had an interest in German football/lived in Germany.

I'm not sure about that ilunga... Camoranesi, Toni and Perotta were all attack-minded too. I thought the game deteriorated in extra time... understandably, because the players were knackered. Both sides made the same 3 substitutions, like-for-like of a forward and 2 wingers... these were made to look better than the guys they replaced because they were running at tired midfielders and defenders.

Iaquinta, Gilardino and Del Piero made more of their chances than Schweinsteiger, Odonkor and Neuville, and that decided the match.

One thing I have to commend the World Cup for are the stadiums. Although some have running tracks which I don't like, the stadiums and pitches have been very pleasing on the eye. Don't think we've got 12 stadiums that can get in over 50,000 spectators.

Third place play-off tonight. Both camps are expressing the importance of the game but surely only Germany can be trusted to put in a performance. Who knows how Portugal will approach it. I'll refrain from backing the hosts though, as the price isn't particularly appealing. With the last seven of these games producing three or more goals, I can't resist the overs at 2.26. I don't expect the kind of negative Portugal performance we saw against England. Scoalri may even drop Pauleta and plump for Postiga and Gomes. Anyway, whatever he does, I think there's value in that price.

Also backing Borowski to score anytime at 7.6. Big price considering he's likely to be given the Ballack role and is a regular scorer for Werder. Also chucked a few quid at Huth and Jansen (who will come in for Mertesacker and Friedrich) at big prices. Both like to get forward from defence.

today

Lay Italy at 2.8 (3.13 on FIFA)...France are 2.56 shots on FIFA so perhaps should back them, but want draw on my side over 90...

Anyone know why the BBC have been watching most of the matches on TV at a hotel or headquarters rather than actually going to the game?

If they're wanting to save money couldn't they have just stayed in London?

I've had a decent punt on the overs at 3.5 tonight.

I can see this being a far better and more open game than the majority think. The Italians, although still tight at the back, look expansive going forward and I don't think the Fench will fancy going head to head in a defensive war.

Two goals or more at Evens and a decent bet on Italy outright at 4/5 for me. Hoping it isn't heart ruling head, because I just cannot have France at all. I thought they were over-rated before the tournament began and I can't let a silly thing like getting to the Final change my mind

Good luck all.
