Arbing can basically be summed up as betting large sums of money at very small odds that none of your counterparties default (which in betting can mean that they go out of business, but is much more likely to mean that they palp the bet).

'No risk' it is not.

Since we're being serious all of a sudden... there's also execution risk. You may not be able to get every leg on at the advertised price in the required amount (prices change, limits can be unpredictable, odds comparison sites are frequently wrong). This can force you to hedge at a loss. There's also the holding cost of keeping substantial deposits with multiple obscure books (one "risk free arbitrage" site recommends you have at least 25), which of course amplifies the counterparty risk.

There is also the 'oversight' risk - i.e. not realising that the rules of one bookie may differ slightly from the other one.. the tie in cricket probably the best example.

yes, sorry for the sudden switch to seriousness.. [insert witty banter here]

Thumbs down Re: arbing?

Sorry, I only happened upon this thread after starting my own. Yes it's true there are risks, which is why it is worth taking some advice from somebody who has learned how to keep them to a minimum. That's what the Arbmachine service which I mentioned in my post is essentially all about.
