View Full Version : Boat Race - Wrong Favourite?

With Easter having arrived unexpectedly early my mind is turning to those events that are much part of the English Spring. For me the first migrant birds to arrive are always a joy, and I was pleased to see a Chiffchaff in my garden this week. Other events I enjoy are the Grand National and the Boat Race, and this year they have had the sense to avoid a clash, so I shall look forward to attending both in person.
I noticed the bookies had priced Cambridge as the favourite so put up some money to lay Oxford on Betfair at evens. Flip-flops are rare in this betting market. However since there seem to be people who have a contrary view, I thought I'd try to do some research.
The most surprising thing I came across was on the official website.
"Speaking of his 2008 line-up, Duncan Holland said: “This year’s crew is younger, lighter and less experienced than last year. I expect Oxford will be the favourites. We’re happy with that and will just have to row better to win.” "
Is this just part of the psychological war or does he genuinely think the opposition should be favourites?

Hi,
Take heart, your comments didnt go without heed.
Your reasearch re the Boat-race is along v sound lines .. but, its a v marginal sport, so, there tends not to be much interest, apart from maybe race day.
I look forward to it, as its often quite a good in-running betting medium, as the radio comms, normally get it spot on (re who will win) - or at least, how the prices will move, when they reach each station, so, its a bit of fun.
The most popular sports on here, are I suppose Golf/Soccer/Horse Racing .. but, as there are many experts in each area, the info tends to be generic at times.
What are your most profitable areas ? Are you a positional player (pre-race), or an in-running player ?

I do best on horse racing, where I have 46 winning months in a row (though many losing days and weeks). I have some good models on football too but don't get enough time to really make the most of them.

If you post some of your horse/football bets/trades in the bronze section you'll be elevated to Gold in no time. You don't have to tip up winners - just provide sound reasoning and intelligent thought.
Your write up on the boat race is good but, as teamsports sats, it's a very marginal event. Keep on truckin' though - and don't be scared to post even if sometimes you get very few replies.

Hi,
48 mths in a row, is a very sound base, so you clearly can identfy which areas, you do best in.
Now, this leads into other ideas :
1) the fact you keep records.
2) You have some models, re sports.
Anyone that can create/finetune a model, and make it beneficial to their trading has my immediate attention .. being an excel idiot, .. or just a techno idiot for that matter ..
As OZZ says, the members in Gold are by and large sad buggers, who spend too much time on here, so, any decent offering by you, will be analysed.
If it has merit, promotion to Gold, will happen, eventually.

I agree with the guys - I picked up on your thread title. The replies will not always be forthcoming but the reasoning and thoughts behind selections allow others to follow suit or at least consider additional material you offer.

It would be against my religion to back Oxford, therefore you are talking shite GB.
Having said that it is utterly superb to see you posting over here (at last!).

I'm biased. My son started at Cambridge last October.
I'm going in LARGE!!
(But all things being equal, won't a lot depend on the toss?)

Does anyone have historical data of who won the toss?

gullible enough to click on it and then try it again without the question mark:{oops}:
I was joking when I made the post of course.. but then I started to wonder just how correlated winning the toss and winning the race would be..

I am afraid I haven't capitalised on this strange movement. Maybe it's gone too far and Camrbidge is now the value. Anyone trying to arb the 98% bookies books dont forget the possibility of a dead heat! Though I suppose with modern technology dead heats are pretty unlikely.
