Not watched the basketball for a long time, but I was really into it when I was in the States [Reggie Miller, Phil Jackson & the Bulls, Charles Barkley, Rodman, Patrick Ewing, that period]. A good day yesterday...2-1. Nba total was an easy win. Denver lead almost the whole game and won outright. And Boston stayed close but just couldnt quite get within 4.

Today 2 nba plays and 1 nhl play. Along with that in ncaafb earlier in the week I posted ucla and arizona state.

So 5 plays today. We are back over 8% return..thats a good sign...as the total bets keep going up...our return is staying steady at 7 to 8 percent!

A great day Tuesday. Phoenix came through in the nhl for a +157 win. Those are always nice. And another close one in the nba but we were on the winning side with under on Golden State.

We have hit a new high in percentage return..now over 11%. I have to remind you that my goal is over 5% in the long haul. But its nice to be increasing total plays with %return increasing also. Thats a very good sign!

Rick just had a look at you blog.

How are you finding the way you are being treated by your government regarding punting or are you ok with the sportsbooks you can use in Vegas ?

also, any good websites to learn a little about neural net analysis, mentioned on your blog? everything i've found so far is very hand-wavey, no real explanation of how it works. the more maths the better.

I use pinnacle sports book and have never had a problem with the us govt. You could bet the casinos lines but they are -110 and 20cent lines in money lines. So your giving up probably at least 3% in vig over pinnacle.

Neural net is a vague term. But without disclosing anything about my methodology it is best used uncovering inefficiencies in the lines. So far using this method I have a 15% return on 200 bets. I cant imagine the lines being that inefficient so I am sure variance has something to do with it. My goal when starting this was to produce over a 5 % return.
When I hit 500 to 1000 bets it will be interesting to see the % return!

There are literally 100s of ways to use neural net analysis the trick is to find one that works. Of course that is just one of the factors I use..just one variable in the equation in coming up with plays.

8-0 SAT!!!!

I am still in shock. An 8-0 day. 5-0 in ncaafb and all were easy wins. 3-0 in nba also easy wins. Scary!

This morning I looked over the nfl again and would really have to stretch to find any more plays so the 3 below that were previously posted are it. 1 nba play and 1 nhl play today also. So 5 plays in all. We are at the 200 play mark and over 15% return. Thats pretty scary also considering if the lines were close to even each way it would be very tough to get this type of return.

My method of uncovering inefficiencies in the lines seems to be working well so far and works in all sports!

most articles i have come across seem to cast neural net analysis in a dubious light - the claim that it "predicts the most likely result" has come up several times :roll:

i can see why non-punters would be drawn to such an imaginary pot of gold, but i feel certain that this is a misleading description of what neural nets are really about.

anyone who knows anything about handicapping would hardly spend all their time trying to work out which result was favourite. my (naive) understanding is that it finds overlays by not getting drawn into generally held biases - but surely this would be the aim of any decent handicapping method?

There is a lot of cloud built up in my memory between now and my uni days, so hopefully I won't say anything too wildly inaccurate here..

Essentially, there is nothing 'special' about neural nets. Much like genetic algortihms they got a fancy reputation in artificial intelligence circles because they drew from biology for inspiration.. at one time they were even seen as being a candidate for creating an artifical human brain.

But just as genetic algorithms are merely one (and rarely the best) method of iterative searching of a solution space, neural nets are just one type of learning algorithm, which can be used when you want to know the 'answer' to the next 'question' and you have a historical sample of data containing a lot of old 'questions' and their corresponding 'answers'.

A neural net, from the outside, works in exactly the same way as a normal regression model - you have input variables (questions), and you have output variables (answers).
And just like a normal linear regression, on the 'inside' you obtain the outputs from the inputs via some mathematical formula / set of weightings.

You train the model (i.e. in a normal simple linear regression model learn the weightings in the equation y=ax+b) by feeding it a set of examples where both the inputs and outputs are known.

An advantage of neural nets is that they are capable of representing nonlinear functions (in fact you could argue that all neural nets are is a representation of a non-linear function). Thus when you are dealing with data which follows an underlying non-linear relationship it is obviously possible to better model it than you could with a linear model.

Ironically the disadvantages of neural nets are brought about by the same complexity that gives them their strength: As with all learning algorithms, the more degress of freedom (i.e. variables to be learned) you have in a model the more you run the risk of modelling the noise and not the signal, hence the more quality and size you need in your training set of data in order to fit them.
Furthermore, they can be so complex that you can't really tell what is going on inside them.. any sort of attmepts to fine-tune or tinker with, or repair a neural net if it starts going wrong can be absolutely futile - you change one weighting a bit and suddenly everything changes and you have no idea why.

Yes it would.. and it all just depends how you use neural nets really. If you feed in a set of examples of runners (say their form figures for example) together with who won the race/match and then ask it to predict who will win the next race then it will just spit out the favourite at you (assuming it's learned enough from the data you've put in to manage to correctly identify who that is).

You can of course set a neural net up to give probabilistic outputs, but that is hardly anything special or unique, or anything specifically to do with it being a neural net.

To summarise, neural nets can and have been used to good effect in real world data analysis problems (including sports handicapping as seems to be being done here), but there is nothing 'magical' about them - they are powerful, but at the same time they are notoriously tricky and unstable, and they still must obey the same golden rules of all data analysis techiques:

1. In the real world, there is no perfect model. All you can do is get as close an approximation as possible to the real underlying effect given the (inherrently limited) data you have.

2. GIGO - garbage in garbage out - no matter how fancy your model is (and in real life often the fanciest models are the worst performers) it can only ever be as good as the data you train it on.

3. If you don't understand how your model works then you don't understand how (and when and why) it doesn't work, hence you are on dangerous ground using it.

just to add, keep it up RickJ - going great so far for you:) 5% return sounds like a sensible and achievable goal to me.

I agree entirely with neural nets and using models for predictive purposes. But they provide a good start to a handicapping routine. But just a start! I fooled around with various models over the years and really have not had much success. It wasn't until I started a new methodology with using a neural net model as a starting point..and then using approximately 6 other steps following to filter and refine predictability that I feel I have been able to uncover inefficiencies in the lines in just about any sport.

But like I said...I dont imagine in the long run you can do much over a 5% return. Right now im at 204 bets with this approach and a 16% return. Nothing like variance to help you out! As it does with many poker players. But its always nice to be on the right side of variance once in awhile.

It will be interesting to see where I come out after 500 to 1000 bets.

A good day yesterday. Dallas under 205 was a winner by almost 20 pts! That brings us to our highest percentage gain yet. 16.26% on 207 bets.

Things have been great..but let me discuss a second about draw down..or variance. Being a poker player it is generally accepted that your bankroll should be at least 300 big bets. Or if your playing 100-200 holdem ..60,000 to play day in and day out. The reason assuming you have a positive expectation in the game is variance or what some people call "running bad".

The same is true for sports betting. Even if you have a positive expectation variance will still require certain bankroll requirements.

So far we have had almost 0 draw down..everything has been pretty much straight up. But reality what it is dont get carried away with this and be conservative, expect ..anticipate a draw down and be prepared.

Sat looked a lot worse then it was. We had 13 plays 9 of the plays were ncaa fb. And of those 9 we went 2-7. I put in a 12 hour day at the 40-80 mixed game at the Bellagio and had the misfortune of having to watch every ncaa fb game:( But then when I checked the nba and nhl we swept all four of those with la a +169 win in the nhl!
So it turned into a -.61 unit day. It really did feel a lot worse:)

An interesting aside....When I went to bed last night the score on the hawaii game was 17-0 at the half. They scored 60 in the second half to go over!

Any way....I could find nothing in the nba or nhl today...and two plays in the nfl. I posted buffalo previously.

Just when I said the lines were getting solid I have 5 nba plays tonight and 2 nhl plays! And they all look pretty good compared to Thurs plays.

We went 2-2 Thursday. 3 nailbiters...winning two of them and losing the other by 1/2 point. The total on the phoenix game was never close to being a win.

Its very tough to beat a -110 line....there are many options out there where you should be able to do better then that. Just by switching to a -105 line saves you 2.5%..thats huge over the course of a season......

We had 11 plays yesterday... 2-2 in ncaa fb, 2-3 in the nba, and 0-2 in the nhl for a - 3.29 unit day. That is the worst day that we have had since I started posting. The good news is I have reached the 250 bet plateau and am over 13% return. As I indicated before my goal at 1000 bets is 5 to 10 % return. So am on track so far.

Another light day, only 1 play ..I dont see much else...either in nba or nhl. Toronto got a 1-0 lead last night and that was the end of that...they shortly after went behind 1-3..so a loss last night in the nhl for -1.0 units.

Monday we went 1-2 in the nba for -1.07 units. New Jersey and the clippers really never had a chance to cover but New Orleans won outright as a home dog.

We had a great november...December is settling down to normal. Win some lose some with a slightly positive bias. We are still almost at a 14% return while we are rapidly approaching the 300 bet mark. Everything is still looking good.

A full slate in the nhl today...but I still cannot find anything there to bet. Los Angeles looked like a good over lay on the overnight line but since then it has moved down...so I am passing on it.

2-2-1 in the nba Wedn and 0-1 in the nhl for a -1.16 day. Thats 3 losing days in a row now. We are in a downswing it appears although a minor one since we have only lost 1 unit per day. From my experience as a poker player downswings can last a lot longer then anyone would ever imagine...so....stay conservative...I just keep my bets the same regardless....I usually dont increase or decrease them...unless I want to move to a higher or lower betting unit for the long run.

Friday was a good day. 2-0 with the knicks winning out right as a dog and the under in laker game winning by 10 points. So two easy wins. That brings us back over +40 units and again close to a 13% return!

I have looked over the nba and nhl games today and there are many..almost 30 games. As of right now I dont see anything. Friday was a 3-4 day for -1.14 units. We were 2-0 on the bowl sides but lost the total. 1-1 on the totals in the nba but 0-2 on the nba sides losing boston by a 1/2 point.

I have looked over the games today and do not see anything there today. So a very rare day... no plays!

The nfl slate tomorrow is very sparse for setups that I can see...so only 1 solid nfl play for tomorrow that I can see.

You also may have noticed I am posting the results and also breaking them down monthly. This I feel will give you a better perspective on what to expect. December has been a very small return month....with one day left...we have 90 bets in +2.14 units and a +2.37% return. If you are laying 11/10 on every play then you are probably only even.

There is nothing easy about trying to make money betting sports. It like most methods of positive return gambling is a grind...other methods here in vegas are live poker, video poker and blackjack. I gave up on black jack when I figured out that a 25 to 50 dollar unit bet would need a bankroll of about 50,000 to produce about 7 dollars an hour!

In any event be careful...remember its a grind..with hopefully a positive expectation and respect variance.

Sunday was a -.15 day. We won our nfl game with atlanta. Went 1-1 on the nba sides and 0-1 on the nba totals.

We had 1 play yesterday..and it won for +1 unit. Houston won outright as a bit dog in the nba.

Today a much bigger slate of games but only 1 nba play I can see.

We hit the 350 bet mark with a new high in units won...+50 and we are now at +14.28% return. This is far exceeding my expectations for uncovering inefficiencies in the lines.

Friday was a 1-1 day for -.10 units. Boston really never threatened to cover but seattle won the game outright as a dog in overtime.

Today 2 more plays in the nba. I have looked over the nfl and cannot come up with any solid plays that I can see. So I am passing on the nfl this weekend.

Oh....I have done some research on other books...and it appears that cascade has -105 betting lines. Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with them? They are the only b+ or better rated book that I can see that has -105 lines.

wedn we had an 0-3 day:( For -3.30 units. All games were close until the 4 th quarter but none of the 3 teams could hang on and cover.

Also I had the rather unpleasant experience of someone messaging me on yahoo complaining. He was rather insulting. So....let me say a few things before I post the plays.

1. This method I am using has been applied only over 364 bets. This is not conclusive to the long run profitablility of this method. Its encouraging but in no way a guarantee making money.

2. If you lose money betting these plays if you need to blame someone for your loss the only one you have to blame is yourself. You elected to make these bets.

3. If you dont have a good money management strategy in place you in all probability will lose all your money because of variance.

4. So far the biggest drop has been around 5 units. That is consistent with a method that has a 13 percent return...So this is also encouraging....but..... at some point I would expect a 15 to 20 unit drawdown.....if you are betting an amount that this would cause you a problem....you are betting too much.

and finally 5. There are very few people that are equipped financially and psychologically to handle the ups and downs of gambling on a daily basis. If your not a professional every instinct you have will attempt and probably will sabotage your success. Human nature runs completely contrary to being a successful professional gambler.

Only 1 play today in the nba that I can see...also looks like no plays again in the nfl this weekend. Also I am now on betcascade..so my plays are all -105. If your laying -110 you can expect about 2 percent less return.

If someone from this forum messangers u in this way, I think u should inform
the administrator, who I would like to think would have a quiet word.

This board has a mix of pro,s, and wannabe's .. only a wannabe would cry
in that fashion.

This affects the pro's, as, it has to leave a mark on your psych, and it would
be very easy, to just think 'To hell with it ..' and stop posting.

Would like to say that RickJ has been a gold member of this forum for a while and can choose to post his tips in the privacy of the gold section if he so wished ( Other Sports Forum ) He has chosen not to.
The tips he posts on here are in the bronze ( public ) section and can be read by anyone not even registered to the forum and also on his blog which is nothing to do with this forum.
Any yahoo messaging of an insulting nature would most certainly not have come from any of our gold members but most likely from an unregistered viewer of the bronze section of this forum or equally likely from a reader of his blog.
If you put tips up in the general domain with contact details Rick, then expect to get some insulting stuff from people out there.

Brutal!...after a 10-0 start to the month we are now on a 0-6 run. 2 tough loses last night in the nba both by less then a bucket. Nothing easy about this gambling:)

Thurs there were no plays. With pinnacle down I am going to post everything at -110. I am expecting this to cost anywhere from 1 to 2 percent in return . Its unfortunate and I am looking into a sports book with similar spreads as pinnacle right now and will know Monday.


You should be able to get better prices than Pinnacle at Tradesports or Matchbook.

Thanks for the info...I have started with bet cascade...-105 lines.

Sat we broke our 0-6 run. Our nhl play lost but Boston +11 went into overtime and they covered. And new orleans won outright as a dog. So a +1 unit day.

To keep things in perspective its been a wild month...starting out with a 10-0 run and just finishing a 0-6 run. but for jan we are at 38 bets ...+7.42 units with a 19.53%return!

Today 1 play in the nba and 1 play in the nfl.

As to the new england line ... all but one offshore book that i can see has -3 and odds from -120 to -135. So if you want New England +3.5 you have to buy the hook....I suspect you will have to lay around -120. Or you can take +3 and get anywhere from +105 to +115. Here in vegas most books have -3.5 -110. In any event If you cant find +3.5 at a reasonable price I would wait until game time to play since the money is coming in on indy.
